UDP 5064
Synopsis
- UDP port 5064 is used by the EPICS Channel Access (CA) protocol for discovery/search traffic between clients and Input/Output Controllers (IOCs).
- CA clients broadcast search requests to UDP 5064, and EPICS IOCs listen/respond on this port to locate process variables.
- Real-world deployments include SLAC’s LCLS/LCLS-II accelerator controls (EPICS), Brookhaven National Laboratory’s NSLS-II, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).
- ITER’s CODAC control system and the Diamond Light Source also use EPICS CA, including UDP 5064, in production.
- Jefferson Lab’s CEBAF accelerator control system is another EPICS site where UDP 5064 is used inside operations networks.
- Security note: EPICS CA lacks encryption and robust authentication, and exposed UDP 5064 services have been observed in internet scans, enabling unauthorized discovery and sometimes read/write access to control system variables.
