TCP 2601
Synopsis
- TCP 2601 is the default VTY (telnet) management port for the zebra daemon in the GNU Zebra, Quagga, and FRRouting (FRR) routing suites.
- Real examples: Quagga-based routers (e.g., older Vyatta/VyOS builds or OpenWrt with quagga) expose zebra’s CLI on 2601 when VTY telnet is enabled; FRR-based systems (such as Cumulus Linux or modern VyOS) can also enable the same port for legacy remote management.
- Tools like Nmap commonly identify 2601/tcp as “zebra/quagga zebra vty” on live networks.
- Security note: this service is plaintext Telnet and historically shipped with default passwords, so exposed 2601 services have been targets for brute-force and misconfiguration-based takeovers; many admins restrict to localhost or disable it in favor of vtysh/UNIX sockets.
