Synopsis

  • UDP port 1194 is the default port for the OpenVPN protocol, used by the OpenVPN Community Edition and OpenVPN Access Server.
  • Network appliances and OS distributions that bundle OpenVPN commonly listen on UDP/1194, including pfSense and OPNsense firewalls.
  • Consumer/SMB gear often exposes OpenVPN on 1194/UDP, such as ASUSWRT/ASUS routers, Synology NAS (VPN Server package), Ubiquiti EdgeRouter, and OpenWrt-based routers.
  • Many commercial VPN providers publish OpenVPN UDP profiles on port 1194, for example NordVPN, ProtonVPN, and Mullvad (via certain configs/regions).
  • Cloud marketplace images of OpenVPN Access Server (AWS, Azure, GCP) ship with UDP/1194 enabled by default for VPN tunnel traffic.
  • SoftEther VPN Server’s “OpenVPN clone server” can accept OpenVPN clients on UDP/1194 when that module is enabled.
  • Security note: because UDP/1194 commonly identifies OpenVPN endpoints, it is frequently scanned on the internet and has seen brute-force or vulnerability-based attacks against unpatched or weakly configured OpenVPN servers.
