TCP 1194
Synopsis
- TCP port 1194 is primarily used by OpenVPN when running in TCP mode.
- OpenVPN Access Server (by OpenVPN Inc.) supports and is frequently deployed to listen on TCP 1194 for client connections.
- MikroTik RouterOS’s built-in OpenVPN server is TCP-only and uses port 1194 by default.
- Firewall/router platforms such as pfSense and OPNsense commonly run their OpenVPN servers on TCP 1194 when UDP is blocked.
- NAS/router firmware including Synology’s VPN Server (OpenVPN), ASUSWRT-Merlin, OpenWrt, and Ubiquiti Edge/UniFi gateways often deploy OpenVPN on 1194/TCP in real-world setups.
- Cloud images of OpenVPN Access Server on AWS/Azure are often configured by administrators to expose OpenVPN on TCP 1194.
- Security note: Attackers routinely scan 1194/TCP to find OpenVPN endpoints and attempt credential brute-force or exploit unpatched OpenVPN/Access Server vulnerabilities.
