UDP 902
Synopsis
- UDP 902 is used by VMware’s vmware-authd (VMware Authentication Daemon).
- In VMware vSphere/ESXi, the host uses UDP 902 to send heartbeats/keepalives to the vSphere Client, and VMware documentation requires UDP 902 open between vCenter/vSphere Client and ESXi for management/remote console functions.
- Legacy VMware products such as VMware Server/GSX also used vmware-authd on UDP 902 for remote console/authentication.
- Many third‑party tools that manage or back up ESXi (for example, Veeam Backup & Replication) rely on this VMware service and require UDP 902 open to the ESXi host.
- Security note: Port 902 (vmware-authd) has been targeted when exposed to the internet; older VMware products had vulnerabilities in vmware-authd that enabled remote attacks, so it should be restricted to internal networks.
