TCP port 8983 is the default HTTP port for Apache Solr (including SolrCloud), hosting its REST API and Admin UI.
Many platforms that embed Solr expose it on 8983 by default, such as Sitecore developer setups, SAP Commerce/Hybris search servers, CKAN, Drupal’s Search API Solr, Blacklight/Samvera stacks, Apache Nutch, and Cloudera Search deployments.
DataStax Enterprise (DSE) Search, which integrates Solr with Cassandra, also uses 8983 for the Solr HTTP endpoint.
Packaged distributions and containers (e.g., Bitnami Solr installers and the official Docker image “solr”) publish the service on 8983 out of the box.
This port is frequently probed because exposed Solr instances on 8983 have been exploited in the wild (e.g., CVE-2017-12629, CVE-2019-0193) and were targeted during the Log4Shell wave when running vulnerable Log4j.
