UDP 8853
Synopsis
- UDP port 8853 has been used by DNS over QUIC (DoQ) during its draft/experimental phase as an alternate port; the final RFC standardized DoQ on UDP 853, but some deployments still keep 8853 for compatibility.
- Real-world software that supported DoQ on 8853 includes PowerDNS dnsdist (configuration examples listening on 0.0.0.0:8853), Knot Resolver (kresd) with DoQ listeners on 8853, and Unbound builds with DoQ where operators often bound the service to 8853 to avoid clashing with DNS-over-TLS on 853.
- Client/server stacks such as getdns/Stubby and AdGuard Home also supported DoQ and used 8853 in sample or legacy configurations during the draft period.
- No specific, common association of UDP/8853 with hacking or exploitation is documented.
