UDP 6889
Synopsis
- UDP port 6889 is most commonly seen with BitTorrent traffic.
- BitTorrent clients such as µTorrent/BitTorrent Mainline, qBittorrent, Vuze (Azureus), Transmission, and BitComet use UDP 6889 for DHT (KRPC), uTP, and UDP tracker communication when their listening port is set to 6889 (historically the 6881–6889 range).
- In practice, many setups still expose 6889/UDP due to older defaults and router/guide recommendations targeting 6881–6889.
- Some BitTorrent-based distribution tools (e.g., Blizzard’s older “Blizzard Downloader” game patcher) used the 6881–6999 range and thus could operate on UDP 6889 when configured.
- Security note: UDP-based BitTorrent features (DHT/uTP) have been abused for reflection/amplification DDoS attacks, so 6889/UDP can appear in such malicious traffic.
