TCP 541
Synopsis
- TCP port 541 is assigned to uucp-rlogin (UUCP rlogin).
- It was used by legacy Unix UUCP implementations (e.g., HoneyDanBer UUCP and Taylor UUCP) on systems like SunOS, HP-UX, AIX, and SCO Unix to allow remote UUCP logins for file and job transfers.
- Many of these systems shipped with UUCP/uucpd and listed uucp-rlogin on port 541 in /etc/services.
- It’s largely obsolete today and typically closed on modern systems.
- Security note: attackers historically probed ports 540/541 because UUCP services often had weak credentials or trust-file misconfigurations, which could allow unauthorized access or file transfers.
