Synopsis

  • TCP port 5269 is the default port for XMPP server-to-server (S2S) federation as defined by the XMPP standard (RFC 6120).
  • Real-world XMPP servers that use 5269 for S2S include ejabberd, Prosody, Openfire, Tigase, Isode M-Link, and Metronome.
  • Public XMPP services such as jabber.org and conversations.im accept incoming S2S connections on 5269 for inter-domain federation.
  • Historically, Google Talk’s XMPP federation used port 5269 to exchange messages with other XMPP domains before it was discontinued.
  • XMPP S2S on 5269 commonly uses STARTTLS and DNS SRV records (_xmpp-server._tcp) to discover and secure inter-server links.
  • No widely recognized non-XMPP uses of TCP 5269 are common.
