TCP 5223

ProtocolTCP
Port5223
LabelsApple Push Notification Service

Synopsis

  • Apple Push Notification service (APNs): iOS, iPadOS, and macOS devices maintain persistent outbound TLS connections to APNs on TCP 5223 to receive push notifications. Real-world dependencies include iMessage, FaceTime, App Store notifications, and iOS/macOS device management via Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, and VMware Workspace ONE (devices must reach gateway.push.apple.com on 5223).
  • Legacy XMPP over SSL (often called XMPP-SSL): older Jabber/XMPP clients and servers used TCP 5223 for direct SSL-encrypted client-to-server connections. Examples include Google Talk (historical), Apple iChat, Adium, and Pidgin connecting to servers like Openfire or ejabberd on port 5223. Many deployments have since moved to STARTTLS on port 5222, but some legacy systems still expose 5223 for compatibility.
