UDP 3283
Synopsis
- UDP port 3283 is primarily used by Apple Remote Desktop (ARD), known as “Remote Management” in macOS.
- ARD uses UDP 3283 for service discovery and task/status control traffic between the ARD Administrator app and client (ARDAgent), while TCP 3283 handles file copy/management tasks and TCP 5900 is used for screen sharing.
- Enterprise Mac tools that leverage ARD, such as Jamf Remote (part of Jamf Pro), rely on UDP 3283 being reachable to execute remote commands, run scripts, and observe users on managed Macs.
- Legacy Apple Network Assistant (Net Assistant) also used UDP 3283, which is why IANA lists the service name as “net-assistant.”
- Exposed ARD services on this port are sometimes probed by attackers for weak credentials or misconfigurations, so admins typically restrict UDP 3283 to trusted networks or VPNs.
