Synopsis

  • UDP 27970 is used in the wild by Quake III engine game servers when operators run additional instances beyond the default 27960, including Quake III Arena, OpenArena, and Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.
  • Many community and hosting deployments bind successive servers on 27961–27970, so you can find public ET/OpenArena/Q3A servers listening on 27970.
  • These servers speak the Quake 3 UDP query protocol (getstatus/getinfo).
  • This port range (including 27970) has been abused for UDP reflection/amplification DDoS attacks by sending forged getstatus queries to exposed servers.
