UDP 1028
Synopsis
- Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003 Messenger Service (the “net send” popup service, not MSN Messenger) commonly received messages via RPC-assigned high UDP ports, and 1028/udp was frequently observed in the wild for this traffic.
- In the early 2000s, spammers and scanners abused UDP 1026–1028 (including 1028/udp) to deliver unsolicited Messenger pop-up spam; this was mitigated by disabling the service and, later, by the Windows XP SP2 firewall defaults.
